Soundtrack Choice

This is the soundtrack chosen for our thriller opening. We chose this because it creates an eerie sensation it adds to the action. We also really liked the modern, electrical sound it has. It makes it very contempory and unnatural.

This is another soundtrack that we considered. We liked the thrilling, creepy effect it has, but it wasn't long enough and didn't match the action as well as choice 1.

This is another soundtrack we considered for our thriller. We really liked the high pitch sounds with the low pitch sounds running all the way through it. We felt it made the thriller feel much colder. We chose choice 1 over this because of the exciting climax it had in the middle, which matched with the action of our thriller very well, whereas this soundtrack didn't have the same climax and was the same all the way through.

Location and Character Shots

These are some photos of the cashpoint location used in our final edit 'Thief'. They highlight an important issue that we have raised about identity theft and mugging. At present -especially during the 'credit crunch' - many people are worried about having their money and possessions being stolen from them.

We have chosen this specific location because due to the narrow street it is in. This is to emphasise the claustrophobic sensation creating the sense of someone looking over your shoulder as you're using the machine. We also think that the stone brickwork and cobbles add to the coldness of the street and mise en scene.

This is a mug shot of Tom Block who plays Will Block. He is dressed in jeans and a jumper with a hood (hoody) which creates a thug-like appearance. Also, he is wearing 'skater' shoes to emphasise his character of 'the skateboarder'.

This is a mugshot of Emily King (me) who plays Eve White. I am dressed in jeans, leather jacket, red scarf and gloves. The appearance is feminine and represents the typical style of teenagers today.

This is a mugshot of Jenna Bolingbroke who plays Scarlet Fraser she is wearing a leather jacket, hoody and heavy make up to make her appear dangerous.

Storyboards

These are my storyboards for our original Thriller opening idea. We have drawn storyboards to make sure that we know exactly what will happen when we start to film. For example, all of the different scenes with their specific camera angles.

These are some sketches of the 'witness' scenes that I have drawn. This shows the same frame that gradually tilts to the side portraying the unclear personality of the 'witness'.

I have used this idea from the film 'The Third Man' demonstrating the intertextual reference with the character 'Harry Lime' and 'Harry' from our original idea 'Double Identity'. This illustrates the complexities of the character and how mystery surrounds him. It makes his motives for watching and hiding in the shadows unclear.

Location Shots

These are a few photos that I took on my mobile of possible locations for our Thriller film.

This is a shot from the other end of the alleyway which emphasises the
lack of light and clautrophobia of it. Also, it gives a sense of 'Harry's' perspective
and how he views things - he doesn't often see the light or goodness in people -
which is maybe why he acts the way he does and doesn't treat people with respect.

These photos are of the alley way on St Stephens Street which were a main factor in our original Thriller idea.

This is a view from the front of the alleyway which is the way we
filmed it for our original idea 'Double Identity'. We liked it because of the
narrowness and darkness which would have reflected the character
 'Harry Cooper's personality.

This is another shot of the alleyway from the back
or 'Harry' and 'Scarlet's' perspective. The darkness again demonstrates their
dangerous personality and the lengths that they go to get what they desire.

These are some photos of the subway that we were originally going to film in. It was close to the alleyway but we found a better one at Grapes Hill which had lots of artistic graffiti all along the walls.
This is inside the subway where we were going to film Eve White getting mugged by
Will Block on his skateboard. We liked the use of the graffiti on the walls because it gives
the effect of the youths of today and their culture. It represents artistic freedom
and rebellion from society which reflects Will's character as he goes after Eve to steal her
money for his own use, breaking out of the social norm and going against the law.
This is another angle of the same subway to show where Eve White would stand when she
stopped running and looked around to see where Will would come from.
The dingy lighting and low ceiling creates the sense of claustrophobia and the use
of multiple entrances gives it a labrynth feel like in the film 'The Third Man'. Harry Lime is in
the sewers trying to escape from Holly Martins and the police but is then surrounded with
no place left to hide. We thought this would be perfect for the mugging because Eve doesn't have
anywhere to hide and she is stuck there waiting for him to come, not knowing what he would do to her.

This is a picture of the entrance to the St Stephens subway
where we were originally going to film. The sloped path was perfect for the
stateboard to go down and the panelling would have made an eerie, menacing sound.

Thriller ideas

The first idea that we had for our thriller film

Characters:

Femme fatal: Scarlet
Gangsters: Nameless men x 3

Plotline:

The victim’s car is driving down the road to the car park multi-storey whilst the femme fatale watches; she’s smoking and gets a call (over the shoulder shot of her on the phone watching the car pulling into the multi-storey) and replies with ‘he has just arrived’. Car is in the car park driving into a space, he gets out and opens the car boot (shot of him from the boot of the car leaning in to get the briefcase) and takes it out and looks inside. Femme fatale walks over to the man holding a gun and asks for the briefcase. Man starts to run, two guys start chasing him (high angle shot of him running down the stairs) and they catch him and the femme fatale hits him and the men drag him into the lift giving the femme fatale the suitcase. The femme fatale goes into the toilets and washes the blood of her hands (shot of her in the mirror, another of the blood pouring down the plughole). She then changes and walks out with the briefcase.

We figured that the plotline would be far too complicated and that we would need the characters to be older than us to make it more realistic. However, we liked the common generics of a thriller film such as the use of the briefcase, femme fatale and the hand gun.
